Around and About Lincolnshire
Market Rasen is a small bustling market town standing on the River Rase on the western edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and is world famous for its racecourse.
It has had a market since the 1300s and today there are all kinds of shops in the town and of course, the market still thrives on Tuesdays (auction), Fridays and Saturdays.
Market Rasen once had an important tanning industry and became prosperous in Victorian times with the arrival of the railways but now it has quiet roads, pleasant footpaths, a golf course, woodland rides and beautiful countryside that attracts the visitors.
Situated on the southern edge of the Wolds lies Horncastle, voted Best Antiques Town in 2001. This is an appealing town with more than 20 different shops dealing in antiques and collectables.
The popular weekly markets are held on Thursdays and Saturdays. There is a tremendous atmosphere with the hustle and bustle of shoppers as the market traders call out their wares.
The picturesque King's Head Public House is one of the few remaining mud and stud buildings with a full thatched roof and is situated next to the new Horncastle Tourist Information Centre.
Louth, is a traditional market town with a bustling market on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, alongside the open-air auction 'on the Stones' every Wednesday afternoon.
The town is watched over by the breath-taking church of St James's with its spire soaring to a height of 295 feet, the tallest parish church in the country. This unspoilt town has many connections with historical events, such as the Lincolnshire Uprising, and with those who have made history including Alfred, Lord Tennyson, famous Poet Laureate and Captain John Smith whose life was saved by the Indian Princess Pocahontas.
Only a few miles away from Louth is the internationally famous Cadwell Park Motorsport. The 0.7 mile circuit was originally built for motorbike races in 1934, but today the two mile track has several features that are unique, particularly 'The Mountain' a short sharp incline that will see the more powerful machinery airborne!
